Guide to Declutter your Home the KonMari Way

“Does it spark joy?”

That’s exactly what Marie Kondo, the Japanese pro organising consultant would ask you on a mission to tidying up your space. In a stimulating home makeover series on Netflix, Kondo uses the innovative KonMari method, and demonstrates life-changing “magic” of tidying up. The idea of living a simplified, uncluttered and minimal life has caught on in recent years, and is considered to have genuine benefits like – having less to organise, less to clean up and less to stress over. But once you’ve made up your mind, the only logical next question is, “Where do I begin?”

Inspired by the concept of choosing joy, we set out to find hacks that will help you organise, make best use of space, and have a house that sparks joy.

In your living room

In your living room

The living room is one of the hardest spaces in the house to tidy up on a day-to-day basis because of lack of attractive storage features. The first step to decluttering this room is to comb through every item, and decide what stays (and of course, sparks joy!) and what goes. Bring in stylish storage with baskets and multi-level coffee tables with concealed storage to store commonly used items like remotes, charges or books.

In your bedroom

We spend more than 100 days per year in bed sleeping. Now add to it lazing in bed and reading, Netflix binging and more. The bedroom should be our zen space, so start off by making your bed to make the room look put-together instantly. Keep throw pillows or laundry off the floor with chic wicker hampers stashed under end tables. Opt for beds with storage space underneath to store bed linen or use as extended closet space.

In your kitchen

Mess always finds its way to the countertops! Being the heart of homes, kitchens are often considered as spaces that house the most amount of clutter. Use up the wall space for a spic and span countertop. Bulky pans and pots occupy precious real estate in your cabinet space. Mount them on walls with a pegboard and put them on display for an orderly kitchen. Another hack experts swear by is the use of vertical drawers. A nifty vertical drawer concealed in a nook goes a long way in taming the stray spices and condiments jars.

In your bath

Let’s be honest, your bathroom shelf has almost as many products as the beauty aisle at the supermarket! That stops now. Reconsider toiletries by discarding outdated medicines, skincare products and cosmetics. Store frequently used products at eye level in cabinets or easily accessible under-the-sink storage. Clear out counters to evoke the sense of a luxurious 5-star bath where you can relax, sans the clutter.

In your closet

Closets are the trickiest spaces to declutter. To purge your closet in a classic KonMarie style, empty contents on the bed and pick up each item of clothing to see if it brings you any joy. Sort clothing into four piles – keep, repair, give and seasonal. Once done, stack outfits by type and label them for quick access. Opt for valets and double hangers to make the most out of a limited closet space.

There! You are now an expert in organising your home.

Removing unnecessary items not only makes your house look neater and stylish, but the process of clearing up is also therapeutic and can lift weight off your shoulders.
